News Article:
Michael Smith works for Bernard Weatherill, the family firm of the former speaker of the House of Commons, Lord Jack Weatherill, which has covered the riding seats of the wealthy for almost a century. The company shares the Savile Row shop of the suit-maker Kilgour French Stanbury, one of the Row's more illustrious tailors, which made Fred Astaire's morning coat for the movie Top Hat.
In a side room, just past the discreet racks of dark London clothes, are two wooden "horses", one with a side-saddle, the other a regular saddle - both known as Dobbin. And it is here that almost everyone of Britain's smartest riders, from the Masters of Foxhounds to the members of the Stage Coaching Club of Great Britain, has sat and been measured for a pair of breeches. The key is to get the knee seam just right and the price of this piece of perfection is £1200.
Quote "The 32 oz material is hard to sew. The breeches are hand stitched, including the buttonholes, and it takes at least three days to make a pair," says Smith. "However, they will last a lifetime of hard riding."
